Drug Rehab Programs: Choosing a Drug Rehab Program That Works for You

The goal of a drug rehab is to enable you or your loved one to live a life free from the effects of drugs. But since not all programs work the same for everyone, a successful rehabilitation depends on choosing the right drug rehab program for your circumstances.

Trying to find the right drug rehab program can be overwhelming because there are so many drug rehab methods, models, treatments and opinions. Once you find out someone is addicted or decide it’s time to get help, there is little time to waste wondering who to call or where to go. A substance abuse problem needs to be addressed immediately, before it becomes a tragedy for your family or friends.

Here are some basics that can help you reach a decision more easily:

DRUG REHAB STARTS WITH DRUG DETOX

The first goal of a drug rehab is to help the addicted person get through the drug detox portion of the drug rehab, so they can accomplish their withdrawal with the least discomfort or danger. The safest way to help them through uncomfortable, painful or even dangerous withdrawal symptoms is a medically supervised detox that is constantly monitored for the patient’s particular metabolic needs. During detox, there should be attention to the general nutritional needs of the addict, since alcohol and drugs can both take a ferocious toll on the body. And because detox can be a very emotional experience, emotional support counseling is an essential part of the drug detox program. When the person is complete with detox, they are ready to continue with the drug rehab program.

DRUG DETOX QUESTIONS TO ASK

So the three drug detox basics are: a) Is the alcohol or drug detox program supervised by experience medical personnel? And is the detox monitored and adjusted to the metabolic needs of the patient? b) Is there a nutritional program to help recover the addict’s physical health? c) Is counseling provided for emotional support? When you have found all three, you’re on the right track to a good drug detox and drug rehab.

DRUG REHAB QUESTIONS TO ASK

Next comes choosing the right drug rehab program. If at all possible, you should choose an inpatient drug rehab program, unless there is a strong reason preventing it. It has been proven that inpatient drug rehab has greater success than outpatient. Also, the length of time in the program is critical. Staying in drug rehab longer than 30 days – in fact at least 90 days is better – has a more successful outcome than staying for shorter periods of time.

As a point of interest, some drug rehab programs are “faith-based” and require a religious type of commitment, such as the so-called 12-step program. Others are non-religious in nature. Don’t forget to ask about this if it is important to you or your loved one.

The right drug rehab program will also work extensively with the addict on life skills such as communication, getting along with others, and taking responsibility for one’s own actions and their consequences – both for the past, and in the future; how to avoid old habits, places and people associated with the addiction; and how to set new life goals and make plans to achieve them; and finally, dealing with personal issues that played a role in causing the addiction.

A good drug rehab program counselor will be happy to answer all of your questions so you feel completely satisfied. Armed with the answers, you should be able to come to a good choice for a successful drug rehab program.
