Good for you! Seriously, I mean it. I’m 18 and I have been self harming for about 2 years now. I know I should stop but I’m too scared to ask for help.

Not sure where you live. But, I lived in the Kalamazoo area years ago. When I first started cutting it was bad and I was hospitalized and then I cut again and went just to outpatient therapy. I will give you links at the bottom so you can find one to suit your needs and location.

I hope one of these links help you!

Self-Harm isn’t an official mental disorder. It is a symptom of an underlying mental disorder. It is listed in the DSM-IV as a symtom of borderline personality disorder.

Self-harm is closely linked to mental disorders: depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, several personality disorders and schizophrenia.

Self-harm is generally seen as a coping mechanism for anxiety, depression, stress, emotional numbness, a sense of failure, self hate; it’s also associated with a history of trauma and abuse, including: emotional abuse, sexual abuse, , drug dependence, eating disorders or mental traits of perfectionism or low self-esteem. Emotional abuse is strongly correlated.

You need to see a psychiatrist, explain everything that’s been going on with you in the past 4 years, and he will have a diagnosis. He will also know of any treatment centers, but there are none sole for self-harm, since it is common in adolescence and young adulthood and not intended for suicide.

Before you can enter a rehab, you need a diagnosis, and to try medicine, counseling and behavior therapy; these treat the underlying cause and relieve symptoms so that you don’t need inpatient treatment. Depends on your insurance coverage too.
