Aspergers Syndrome and Schizophrenia: Why Were People With Aspergers Previously Misdiagnosed as Schizophrenic?

Question by : Aspergers Syndrome and Schizophrenia: Why were people with aspergers previously misdiagnosed as Schizophrenic?
I’ve heard that this is common as people with undiagnosed asperger’s at the time when AS was unknown which was before 1994, believed in adolescence or early adulthood that they had a psychiatric disorder like Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, OCD or clinical depression as they were misdiagnosed and been therefore given the wrong drug treatments which made their symptoms worse and unnecessary. There are a lot of news articles stating people with aspergers being previously misdiagnosed as schizophrenic.

Aspies, were you previously misdiagnosed, if so say why and how did it affect you?

Ok. My brother is Aspergers and although diagnosed correctly it was not until he was 14 years old.

I can see why they would do it as they didn’t know much about AS and many of the things an AS person does could lead to other diagnoses. I.e My brother only likes things to be in certain orders, does things on certain days, only eats certain foods, can’t commincate well so gets frustrated and lashes out at us, doesn’t like change, can be calm one minute then change if he fells strongly about a subject and shouts about it (sometimes putting the words in a cruel way) Makes him sound like a sadist. LOL They also don’t like going places on their own or will only do so taking one route.

Ok so this all sounds long winded but you get the idea.

Being diagnosed mean we finally understood where he was coming from and make consessions.

My brother felt frustrated and got into a lot of trouble at school cause they thought he was a ‘bad lad’, and was misbehaving on purpose. He felt very misunderstood.

Hope this helps
