Family Alcohol Addiction. PLEASE HELP!?

Question by Emily Summers: Family Alcohol Addiction. PLEASE HELP!?
I don’t know where to turn. To shorten a very long story as best as I can my 24 year old brother is a severe alcoholic, he does nothing but drink and if he doesn’t drink he has seizures. These seizures have racked up hospital bills that he will never be able to pay since he can never get a job because his problem is debilitating. I think he started drinking because he has an anxiety problem. He used to be a star baseball player and a “normal” person, but for the last five or so years has basically been ghost who has no real life and no future…it breaks my heart every time I see him. It’s killing him and ruining my family. We do not have a lot of money, but I’m willing to find a way to get it if necessary and the only detox he has ever been to was literally in the ghetto and it was a terrible situation so we don’t want him to go back there. I guess I just don’t know what to do, does anyone know how to get him help or have ever been in a smilar situation who can help?

My family was in the same situation. It is very sad and heartbreaking!!!!!!!!! This person misses family functions, appointments…..life, basically. There really isn’t much to be done in the end. Your brother has to want to help himself. Even if he does it’s still hard for him. REALLY HARD. Detox will definitely help but it’s only a temporary fix. I’ve heard of people going to detox time and time again!!! It may help him to go to a clean and sober living situation. It’s a regular house with other people coping with alcoholism. There is one person who watches over them and they all have to attend meetings and check in to make sure they’re clean. It does cost monthly but would be a really good support system for your brother. I talked to the head guy at a clean and sober place and he’d been to several detox facilities. He said what helped him is that his family and friends set up a faux funeral for him and everyone got up and said their farewells. His son told of how much he didn’t want to be like his father. That really got to him. What you and your family can do for your own sanity is to join an Al-Anon meeting. Not AA. Al-Anon is for family of alcoholics. It really helps to cope with the situation. http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/english.html
If you need anymore info or just have a question do not hesitate to send an email. God bless!!! I pray that this will get better for you and your brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
