My Friend Just Got Out of Rehab and He Still Seems Sad. What Am I Going to Do?

Question by derek: My friend just got out of rehab and he still seems sad. What am I going to do?
Bobby just completed the entire therapy in a drug rehabilitation center. The counselors and the doctors said that he did just fine. He was cooperative and participative in the activities and therapies. I was happy to hear the news and I was also excited to have my friend back. The thing is, when I first saw him after his exit from rehab, I noticed the sad look in his eyes. He still seems depressed and miserable that I’m scared that he will go back into his old ways and rely on his other best friend: marijuana. What am I supposed to do? I really want to help Bobby overcome his addiction.

Maybe the reason why he’s so miserable is because he had a blast inside rehab. I mean, it can happen. I’ve heard people talk about the wonderful things that they experienced while getting treatment. Maybe he misses all the friends he met there. Maybe he misses the therapy sessions and fun activities. Persuade him into pursuing a new hobby like sports, arts, literature or music. Invite him to play basketball or go swimming. Just think of things that might relax him a little bit. Get him busy so that he will not have the time to think about the things that makes him so miserable. I think you better try your best to cheer him up. Laughter is still the best medicine!

Drug Consumption Room DOC – This Documentary invites the audience to see the harsh reality of ‘street injecting’ drug users in the UK’s second city Birmingham. The presenter Philippe Bonnet explores this subject by interviewing outreach workers, health care professionals and current and ex drug-users. The film shows how other countries around the world have found a solution to this and as a result have reduced harms and costs associated with this phenomenon and ultimately helped drug users access treatment and begin their recovery.

The best thing u can do for ur friend is to be there to support him, because after all it’s a new beginning for him. Try to always cheer him up even with small things like jokes or try to take him to do some trips. I think that he needs a new and strong perspective to grow as a person and leave behind the past.

One day society will look back at these days before safe injection sites became common as the primitive bad old days – the dark ages – days of smart phones and dump public policies. ?

  • Danny Morris says:

A remarkable film that necessarily highlights the the realities faced by a significant and vulnerable minority of people who inject drug in public? settings. The argument for DCRs in Birmingham and in similar urban settings is very well made and supported by growing evidence of effectiveness. DCRs provide a humanitarian and cost effective response to injecting drug use and the UK would be well served to implement them. More people should see this.

Thank you for your kind words Jon, much appreciated?

  • Jon Derricott says:

A powerful film that makes absolute sense! I know how much thought, time, effort and care will have gone into it. You make a compelling argument for DCRs in Birmingham and other? large UK cities. Anyone who watches the film and agrees, should particularly encourage people you think might have a positive influence to watch it too. Thank you.

The aim of this documentary is to highlight the plight of inner city public injecting, it’s risks, consequences & how this phenomenon could be pragmatically addressed. I would like to thank Luke for all the? hard work & countless hours spent on this project. What a humbling experience this has been. I can’t be grateful enough to all that took part. Lets hope common sense prevails…..soon. Philippe
