You simply have to have a serious deterrent to try and stop future
generations from becoming addicts and is clearly the best way forward for
me as weve had decriminalisation now for 40 years in all but name and its
led to an explosion in drug addicts and drug abuse, that is still rising,
and Hitchens is also right with what he says to regards to Brand as we see
in that interview, Fair enough that the BBC want to get the side across
from an ex addict but he is incapable of reasoned debate and it is an
embarrassment to them and shows how low their intellectual standard has
fallen that this guy is put up by the BBC to debate this serious issue.
Although 1 point they both agree on is Brand is in favour of abstinence as
is Hitchens so if our prisons were looked after properly and werent so full
of drugs then that would be the best place for addicts to get clean and it
protects the public from further crime to fund their habit and we can also
have a deterrent back to try and stop the number of addicts from continuing
    to rise.?

This is not about who is being compassionate and who is taking
responsibility. It is about results. And I can tell you that Peter
Hitchen’s plans of strict enforcement and harsh punishment will not get
    results.

A lot of study has been done on criminal deterrence by sociologists and
criminologists over the past several hundred years. There has been
absolutely overwhelming evidence that severe punishment is very ineffective
as either a specific or general deterrent.

These drugs can kill you. Drug users knowingly risk death when using
drugs. Does Peter really believe that harsh criminal punishment will scare
people out of doing drugs when the risk of death by overdose does not?
    What a delusional concept!

Hitchen’s opinion run pretty much counter to all scientific evidence on
this subject. He is basically just one of these reactionary “short sharp
shock” corporal punishment British private school assholes. Hard to
believe what a brilliant intellectual his brother was.?

  • Mehbobo Torp says:

    Peter Hitchens…..
Jesus Christ is this guy for real?! How does this personality-less highly
arrogant attitude and stubbornness get a job as important as
reporter/journalist?! Both his attitude and his “opinions” are so
    disconnected… it’s fucken sad!?

  • Yeck pls says:

    Fucking tories. ?

  • Chas Grav says:

Started off with good intentions?? Are YOU high? I started off knocking
over a liquor store; I had good intentions: I wanted a couple grand,
tax-free! I never did that intending to get caught. I walked out along the
ledge of my 50 story apartment building. I had good intentions; I only
wanted the thrill of it, I never intended to fall. You can’t fault me.?

  • tiberiius says:

it really seems that the topic gets lost in the process of the debate. one
side has to be right and the other has to be wrong. not to mention personal
    grudges clouding the subject.

it seems that it is a hybrid of the two. peter hitchens argument is
completely valid. it’s illegal, send them to jail and it will deter others
    from trying the drug out.

if the person gets busted again, have them go through a rehabilitation
program in prison and when they get out.

deterrence and rehabilitation are the way to go.?

  • toffeespartan says:

Peter Hitchens doesn’t seem to know about compassion and empathy for other
    people.?

  • Itz Levity says:

lol at i don’t think ur a real person?

  • Alfredo Castro says:

This is absurd! People born with these genetic discrepancies must first,
according to Biological evidence and the most recent studies in
    Neuroscience, activate them.
The answer is simple, you have both laws and programs. Laws are used to
deter people from using drugs in the first place, while recovery programs
are used to help drug addicts cope and overcome with their already drug
    addiction.?

  • Manny Dafs says:

peter is such in ignorant prat, doesn’t he know there are kids that born
with the addiction, is it their fault? do he want them to be punished too?
or do they have a will to stop ? what in ignorant men, I never hear such
    stupidity .?

  • Huey W says:

Hitchens is just a professional troll. The male version of Katie Hopkins. ?

  • cm243286 says:

Hitchens owned them…decades of Socialism have turned Britain into a
cesspool ….Churchill would turn in his grave….?

  • Owen Martin says:

Russell Brand’s last brain cell for reason was decimated years ago. Peter
Hitchens wipes the floor with him.?

  • EagleEyeEire says:

Oh yeah how’s the detterence going? Not very well from the 40 years of
statistics and 10s of billions spent on it.

Have to laugh at deluded fuckers that think they can ever police someones
    free will.

Please re-educate yourself in the field of common sense?

  • Henry Croston says:

I understand that this is an important issue, but what is more important is
how much Peter Hitchens looks like a turkey.?

  • chunda wong says:

GO RUSSELL! LOVE HIM TILL HE UNDERSTANDS!!?

  • Schmidty the Kid says:

Russell Brand use to annoy the hell out of me, but the I watch him the more
    I like him.?

  • MFCutlass says:

Did Peter eat all the paint of Christopher’s toys when they were kids or
something? I know it’s not big to laugh at the mentally challenged, but
somehow laughing at Peter, well, it just feels right.?

  • alex says:

If only Peter Hitchens had have died instead of his brother…?

  • Jeremy Burrows says:

Peter your one of the most ignorant people I’ve seen displaying there
thoughts and opinions on the media. Try listening to what Russell is
    conveying.?

  • Lopan says:

Not sure how I got here through the youtubes… nor do I have an in depth
knowledge of British drug laws… nor am I a drug user. But this Peter
Hitchens is completely ignorant. He advocates for harsher criminal
penalties for drug use…. Look at Florida, Arkansas, hell, half of the US
south. Stricter penalties for drug users has been proven time and time
again to have no effect in combating the problem. Drug abuse needs to be
treated as a healthcare issue and not a criminal issue. ?

  • Ian Almond says:

You’ll never get a clean debate with these two because Peter Hitchens is
always after a fight – just watch his confrontational body language as
Brand is finishing his introduction. I suspect they have had “previous”, or
it might just be that Brand both looks like and has similar liberal views
to Jesus, (which would annoy me if I were an old-testament style
    church-goer).
Why do they never seem to question the rights of non-drug users to impose
    drug laws on others??

  • Dan Hong says:

    “was that you peter?” bahahahaha?
