Southern Region Community Corrections Center Grand Opening

Southern Region Community Corrections Center Grand Opening – The Arizona Department of Corrections has opened the Southern Region Community Corrections Center for high-likelihood to recidivate, but low public-risk offenders. In the past fiscal year, almost 3000 offenders were returned to the prison system not as a result of new crimes, but as a result of technical violations. They served an average of 91 days in prison, at a price tag to the State of Arizona of just under 16 million dollars. This intermediate-sanction facility will offer an array of services including Substance Abuse Counseling and Job Development. The program is evidence-based, and follows proven models from elsewhere in the country. The Department’s objectives are to reduce the recidivism rate, reduce the operating cost of the Arizona State Prison System, and to keep low public-risk offenders living and working in the community, with Public Safety first and foremost in mind.
