What Kind of Previous Work History Do Railroads Like Union Pacific Prefer?

Question by The system works for them: What kind of previous work history do railroads like Union Pacific prefer?
I know i’ve been asking allot of questions here lately, and some of you might be getting tired of it, it’s just that i can’t seem to get any solid answers anywhere else.
Anyways, i’m 22 with no qualifications or impressive work experience. It seems like freight railroads prefer to hire military veterans and more “qualified” individuals, not just some poor guy off the streets. I guess the only real good thing I have going for me is no criminal history.

Would I even have a chance?

I know many of the positions at UP require a degree in engineering. They do have a position called Track Laborer. I would imagine it is a pretty labor intensive entry level position that you might be able to apply for.
