TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) – Researchers find violence at the border is going up and that the usual suspects are not committing all of it.
Jeremy Slack is helping to lead a team that’s researching drugs and violence at the border in conjunction with the University of Arizona. Researchers have interviewed 500 captured illegal immigrants so far. What they’ve found, Slack says, is an increase in what he calls physical and emotional violence.
“What constitutes emotional violence?” KGUN9 News reporter Ileana Diaz asked him.
“We really want to broaden the definition of violence and not just have it be one person doing something physically to another,” Slack said. “But there are a lot of symbolic acts and there’s a big emotional toll from these symbolic acts such as you know being chained up for a long period of time, being treated like a criminal.”
Slack holds smugglers, bandits and even border patrol agents responsible for both kinds of “violence.”
Slack makes no apologies for pointing a finger of blame at the Border Patrol, or for comparing their actions to those of human and drug smugglers.
“For me it is, I think all of our official figures, all authorities should treat everyone with respect and I’m not saying there’s never a time or place for it but we should hold authorities to another level,” said Slack.
Slack said illegal immigrants are victims of racial name-calling and cursing. But he said findings so far show that 30 percent of them report physical abuse from agents as well.
KGUN9 News contacted the Border Patrol, seeking its reaction to Slack’s study. No one from the agency would agree to go on camera, but the patrol sent this statement:
“We do not tolerate corruption or abuse within our ranks, and we fully cooperate with any criminal or administrative investigations of alleged misconduct by any of our personnel, on or off duty. In fact, we have put in place extensive measures to proactively prevent misconduct by employing a rigorous vetting process and conducting thorough background investigations on those we hire.”
Slack is one of the organizers of the study, being conducted with the assistance of University of Arizona students, and funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation. Study organizers plan to interview several hundred more border crossers, and expect to release full findings next year.

Well they get chained up because without being chained up, they will likely run for the hills. No one is more of a flight risk than an illegal alien
